Who Clicked? The Story of Jim

Had I known then…

Jim liked to watch the news online and surf the web during breaks.  Nothing that was inappropriate, just normal websites, Facebook, news, weather, etc.

Next thing you know his computer was showing some weird things on the screen. Uh oh, he thought, I better let Fred know so he can call our IT company to fix it.

Jim walked across the hall to let Fred (Operations Director) know what was happening.  As they were in the middle of the conversation Fred’s phone starts ringing off the hook.  No one can get into their files.  Everyone in the company was having issues.

Within a very short period of time, the entire company of over 25 employees, was completely shut down.  All of the data was gone.  No notice, no ransom note, nothing…. just a lot of unhappy people unable to access any of their files.

That’s okay Fred thought, we have an IT company, they can fix it!

Still not overly worried, Fred called their IT company (that they had been paying money to every month to keep them safe). It wasn’t until he heard the words “we can’t help you” that he began to panic.

“What do you mean you can’t help us?” Said Fred.

“Well, you never upgraded to the newest protection package installed to get your files back” said the IT company.

“Why didn’t you tell me what could happen if we didn’t have it and that we needed it?  And why are you still charging us EVERY MONTH for the old protection package if you knew it wouldn’t work?” said Fred.
To make a long story short, Fred was now out of options for a quick restore.  Every file had to be individually restored, one by one.  That might not seem like a big deal but think about it – how many files do you have on your computer?  On your network?  If each file took 5 minutes to restore how many hours, weeks, even YEARS would that take?

And not only that – who gets priority?  Do the CEO’s files get fixed first?  What about billing? Or sales?  Who is the most important and do you even want to have that conversation in your company?

Fred was stuck and lost a mountains worth of data, time and money trying to restore the situation.  Needless to say, he researched and found a new IT company that provided much better security and one that put their clients first.

All because Jim clicked on something that looked like a regular story….

I would love to hear your thoughts and experiences of the good you have found with technology.
